At ED&D, we understand that the pursuit for equity is a collaborative effort and are excited to work with our many partners and team members to develop support for school communities throughout California for students, staff and families. We are excited to share our upcoming fall professional learning opportunities below. Be sure to sign up or pass them along to anyone who may be interested!
Leveraging MTTS/PBIS Systems to Decrease Disproportionality
Susan Barret and Dr. Patricia Hershfeldt from Director and Co-Director for the Center for Social Behavior Support (CSBS) at Old Dominion University, for Cohorts 5 and 6 of their work around school systems and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Through these virtual trainings, multi-disciplinary school teams engage in a hands-on approach as equity work is implemented through a tiered systems of support. They learn the “what and why” of systems work, the components of the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) and “how” to evaluate a school’s implementation with designed action planning for areas needing improvement. Professional Learning Communities allow teams to learn from each other as well as from other schools and individual team office hours help participants brainstorm ideas that lead to creative ways of working with their school communities.
Patty and Susan bring a wealth of knowledge and research from working with districts and school teams throughout California as well schools throughout the country and consulting with PBIS Technical Centers and PBIS organizations in many States. Cohort 5, which started August 16 & 17 is underway and we are currently accepting registrations for Cohort 6 which starts in September. So come join us for Cohort 6 (4 Day Event) 09/27/2022-09/28/22 from 8:30-3:30pm, and 10/18/22 & 11/09/22 from 8:00-12:00pm and bring your school or district team.

Dr. Samuel Ortiz
Dr. Sam Ortiz, Professor of Psychology and Director of Graduate Programs in School Psychology at St. John's University returns to South County SELPA in September for two days of informative training to assist in the pre-referral process and non-discriminatory assessment of English Learners. Dr. Ortiz's work over the years has been based on ensuring equity within school systems and always placing students at the center regardless of their ethnic background, disability, language or social economic status. On day one, participants will learn the valuable pre-referral strategies that help guide practitioners through the routines with a step-by step format of reviewing records, conducting observations and interviewing. Day two focuses on the nondiscriminatory assessment to ensure teams are evaluating students using best practices.
Throughout both days, Dr. Ortiz incorporates research, personal stories of his shared experiences and examples that help participants actualize this important work. These trainings are provided in person (limited space) and virtual. We look forward to seeing you at the sessions on September 13th “Square Pegs in Round Holes: Challenges in Educating and Evaluating English Learners-Bilinguals are not two monolinguals in one head” and September 14th “Best Practices in Evaluation of English Learners: A practical, nondiscriminatory assessment approach for all practitioners.”

Equity Dispro Data System (EDDS) Project
The continuing EDDS training offers participants the opportunity to look at the components of data that make it such a powerful tool when analyzing demographics: The ethics and the foundation when calculating risk ratios for disproportionality. Through the gradual release approach, “I do, we do, you do,” this training assists teams as they work through their data and provides language that makes it easier to interpret and share results with their school communities. In the EDDS training, there is always a wide range of experience levels, which makes it a comfortable environment to share and grow in your data work with others. After the two-day training, team members have access to coaching support as needed from the ED&D team.
The EDDS Project training will be held throughout the school year so sign up and invite a team member to one of the sessions.

National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST)
We’re looking forward to the next session of work with the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST). Our school community members have enjoyed the first hand knowledge of former principals and superintendents as they share best practices and experiences while leading award-winning schools. Through research, these outstanding leaders have succeeded in building the blueprint and developing strong school teams that have proven that any child, when given the opportunity in a motivated and engaging environment, can and will achieve at the highest level.
Participants for session 4 “Building Fluency With Gatekeeper Vocabulary,” will learn about high performing schools and their best practices in building fluency with key concepts. The one day event will take place virtually November 12, 2022 from 8:30-11:30 with coaching opportunities to support teams. Session 5 “Making Students Feel Valued and Capable” will be posted soon, so save the date for November 1, 2022.

Equity Conference 2023
The annual San Diego County Equity Conference, which ED&D co-sponsors, will return to San Diego on January 19 and 20, 2023. This year’s theme, “Equity is Love in Action,” will bring together educators, community leaders, parents, students, advocates, and policymakers to share and learn about equity and how it impacts and benefits students in our schools and communities. The dynamic list of speakers, from a variety of backgrounds and professions, will share diverse perspectives and resources. This gives participants an opportunity to meet and network for continuing or future collaborations.
The conference strands include areas that will reach a wide-range of student groups and ensure that marginalized populations are represented. A Call for Papers has already begun, so make sure to submit an application because we’d love to hear you share your story as a member of our equity community.
